Rail Transportation

The railway has been at the centre of Saskatchewan since the arrival of Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) in 1882.  There is 1,890 km of railways under provincial jurisdiction with the main.  Accounting for over half of CP’s freight hauling is coal, grain and intermodal with other commodities including automotive parts and assembled automobiles, fertilizers, other chemicals, forest products etc, and it’s expected that crude oil will become a new major commodity shipped by rail in the coming years.  CP saw their volume of crude oil shipped dramatically rise from 500 carloads in 2009 to 13,000 in 2011.
